Sowerby Gateway Project

[Friday 09 July 2010]

Chrysalis Arts have been appointed as art consultants to provide advice to the Sowerby Gateway design team and identify opportunities for public art. Sowerby Gateway has been chosen as Hambleton District Council’s preferred option for development within the Local Development Framework and Yorkshire-based developer, Castlevale, together with Broadacres will develop the site for mixed use over the next 16 years, subject to planning approval.
Chrysalis Arts are producing a public art strategy with guidance on planning, commissioning and funding art to integrate with the development which will include housing built to Code 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) .

The development of Sowerby Gateway will involve public consultation and artists will engage local people creatively in the process through participation in art workshops.  The first workshops (see poster below) will be held at the Old Court House, between 5pm and 8pm on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 July. All those who are interested in public art and its place in the Sowerby Gateway scheme are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact:  kate@artdepot.org.uk

Walkers sought for MEANDER

[Tuesday 08 June 2010]

Participants Sought for Meander
Taking part in Meander
What it is?
Meander is a project by ADEPT (artists Shanaz Gulzar and Steve Manthorp) commissioned by Chrysalis Arts as part of their Slow Art commissioning strand.
Meander will be created by many voluntary participants.  They will choose the route of a marathon walk within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  Pairs of volunteers (who can be part of a larger group) will walk a roughly two hour section between chosen start and end points, whilst recording the walk from their own perspectives on headband-mounted video cameras.
The two recordings will be edited together into a synchronised, split-screen movie showing where the wearers were looking and what engaged their interest at every moment.

The artwork produced will comprise the walk itself, the video (or at least, sections of it) and a touring exhibition featuring various aspects of the walk including maps and a ‘walk diary’.  The artists hope that their artwork will encourage its audience to abandon the gallery and enjoy the landscape for themselves.

You can book a walk by talking to the artists, 07507-400489 or 07816-526121 or directly through the Meander website: www.adeptprojects.co.uk.  All walks take place between two “Welcome Points” – places which have volunteered to look after the cameras and backpack between walks.

When you book, the starting Welcome Point will have been determined by the previous booking.  When choosing your finish Welcome Point from the list and map, try to find one that you can comfortably reach in roughly two hours – the camera batteries last about 2hours.
How can I take part?
If you don’t want to begin your walk from the nominated starting Welcome Point when you visit the website, just visit the site again in a day or two and continue to do so until you find a starting Welcome Point that suits you.  Alternatively you can email the artists at info@adeptprojects.co.uk, telling us all of the Welcome Points that you would be able to start from.  We’ll keep an eye on bookings and let you know when one of your chosen starting Welcome Points comes up.
What do I do once I've booked up?
When you’ve booked you will receive an email confirming your booking and giving any additional information that you may need. On the day of your walk, try to arrive at your starting Welcome Point as near as possible to the time you chose on the booking system.  When you have identified yourself to the Welcome Point hosts, they will give you the Meander backpack.  This should contain:
·         Two cameras and headband mounts (the cameras may be in black, zip-up carry cases)
·         The ‘Walk Diary’, a spiral bound sketchbook with red covers
·         Laminated instruction sheets
·         Pencils
·         Two mains chargers
·         Spare batteries
·         Spare Micro SD memory cards
Before you set off, try the head mounted cameras on.  Use the instruction sheets to work out how to turn them on and off.  Adjust the headband for a comfortable fit.  Make sure your fellow walker’s camera is level (we don’t want a two hour video of nothing but sky or footpath!) and straight (we don’t want wonky video either!).
When you’re ready, turn both cameras on at roughly the same time and start your walk.
On your walk
Be safe.  Don’t take any unnecessary risks and don’t walk in dangerous conditions.  Try to keep out of water.  We don’t want to lose our cameras and we REALLY don’t want to lose you.
Take any safe and legal route you choose between your start and end Welcome Points.  Enjoy your walk.  Look around, chat to each other, stop, rest and enjoy the view.  Don’t feel you have to perform; just do whatever comes naturally.  Try not to turn off the cameras for any reason (arguments make great watching in split screen!)
Check your walking companion’s camera every 15 minutes or so to make sure it’s still level & straight and that the recording light is still on.
The Walk Diary is for YOU.  You don’t have to add to it, but we’d be happy if you did.  You can add to it in any way that seems sympathetic to the project; you could write a brief account of your walk or an incident that took place, add a sketch or a poem, greet other Meanderers or just sign and date it to show when you took part.
The same goes for the backpack.  Feel completely free to add something to it, whether that’s your signature, a badge or something you found on your walk.  Just avoid anything heavy or sharp that might scratch the contents of the bag or tear another Meanderer’s clothes.
When you get to your end Welcome Point enter the building and turn the cameras off at roughly the same time.  Identify yourself to the Welcome Point host (making sure it’s someone who knows about the project!) and hand in the cameras and backpack.
Please go to www.adeptprojects.co.uk to book your walk.
