In 1994 Groundwork Blackburn commissioned Chrysalis Arts to design and implement a public art project on a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool canal directly above the railway station with a panoramic view of Blackburn. The scheme formed part of the Leeds Liverpool Canal Corridor Improvements carried out by Blackburn City Challenge and involved constructing 75 metres of dry stone wall incorporating three long seats and two sets of cycle barriers.
Kate Maddison & Rick Faulkner developed the design with mosaic by Tony Stephenson and stonewalling by Philip Dolphin. The concept is related to combining the practicalities of creating a safe canal cycle way and attractive seating areas with the themes of the history and imagery of the canal and railway at Blackburn.

The linear oak and steel seats with mosaic backs, one of 6 metres in length and two of 2 metres incorporates design and motifs depicting the railway and canal. They are topped by a dry stone 'rope' design built as part of the canal wall and ending in a stone rope coil that forms a pier at each wall end. The rope theme, taken from the use of ropes on canal boats, continues into the paving and unites the wall with the ground surface.
Between the coiled rope stone piers, there are 2 sets of cycle barriers, one depicting mills and chimneys, the other designed in consultation with Sam Yates, a retired local canal boat builder and painter.
The site was only accessible by the canal and towpath so the installation was facilitated by a boat loaned by British Waterways which added an authentic touch to the construction process, the launch event was held in April 1995.
