Steel and Enamelled Panels, Corner Features and Marmoleum Panels

Stockport MBC commissioned Chrysalis Arts to create three art features to be incorporated into the new-build community centre in Bridgehall estate completed in 2007.

Lead artist, Van Nong worked with local community groups through a programme of consultation and workshops to come up with designs that represent the past, present and future of Bridgehall.

The marmoleum panels are inset in the floor covering to show aspects of Bridgehall's past heritage and physical landscape. A series of digital designs were developed from drawings, photos and text including the flora and fauna of the Back Fields, Whippet Racing and a central large piece at the reception area of a daisy field that used to be on the site on which the community centre now stands.

The 5 cut-out steel and enamelled panels represent contemporary activities that people are involved in such as carnival and celebration, sport and healthy living, music and movement, play and childcare.

The two corner features represent the aspirations and talents of Bridgehall young people. The artworks illustrate some of the aspirations held for the future by local young people. They acted out different professions, posing whilst their shadow was projected onto a screen. Their ingenuity was tested as they had to create home made props to help illustrate their chosen roles.

One participant commented, "I think it's good for our reputation, as young people from Avondale High, to have been involved in this project because we're doing something positive for the community."
