Angel Healthy Living Centre, Chapel Street, Salford

Chrysalis Arts was commissioned by Salfod City Council's Arts Development Service to create a public artwork within the Chapel Street regeneration area and actively involve the community in the project. After various sites were considered and ideas developed through a consultation and workshop process with local residents and a homeless group, the entrance to the Angel Healthy Living Centre was selected for the artwork.

Artist Van Nong developed the project with the support of Kate Maddison and worked with local community groups to develop the structure, their ideas focused on the social, economic and environmental changes in Salford.

The sculpture takes the form of two leaves that come together to form a pod, enveloping a seed which is highly polished to reflect its surroundings. The sculpture is mounted above the main entrance doors and the idea is that the viewer sees their own reflection as part of the reflected image of Salford and the seed represents Salford's potential and hopes for the future.

Illuminated with blue LED light the artwork was fabricated in stainless steel by Trapp Forge, Lancashire. Completed in 2006 the project is part of the ongoing regeneration programme for the Chapel Street Area and its public art and lighting strategy and the sculpture is on the Irwell Sculpture Trail.
