Circular mosaic paving, 10 steel panels and three seats
This project took place as part of a programme of refurbishment for Davyhulme Park and involved a collaboration with several divisions of the Department of Environment and Leisure of Trafford Borough Council. Artists were invited to submit proposals for a scheme to improve the viewing area in the park. Chrysalis Arts was selected with a proposal by Kate Maddison to add community mosaic paving, a series of steel panels and steel/oak seating to the Landscape Architect's design for a new landscaped Viewing Area with disabled access ramp.
The theme of the ten panels surrounding the seating area is the natural and urban environment underground. Artists Kate Maddison and Tracey Cartledge worked for three days with staff and third year pupils of Flixton High School for Girls to create silhouette templates for the panels which were then fabricated in steel by blacksmiths from B. Rourke and Co, Burnley.

The design of the mosaic is based on the theme of 'time and the seasons'. Local schools, community groups and individuals were invited to participate in workshops led by the artists and held in the Park's Bowls Pavilion. The participants created their own mosaic sections which were cast in separate concrete slabs. Sixty-nine of these were arranged in a circular pattern, orientated to the North.
The project involved 300 local residents from the Davyhulme and Urmston area.
