Hutton Gates - Headingley

Sir Leonard Hutton Gates - Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds
Metalwork and Bronze Casts

The gates were commissioned by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in April 2001, with a tight completion date of 15th August. The Club wished the design to celebrate Sir Leonard Hutton's finest hours but also to be relevant to Headingley as it is today.
Hutton Gates - Headingley Sited by the newly-constructed West Stand, the overall composition of the gates with their steel framework is based on a scale plan of the Headingley Ground. The cast bronze pieces are real or modelled cricket items, and the imagery for the silhouette cut-out steelwork is derived from historical or contemporary photographs.

The gates became the focus of a much-publicised "controversy" when an article in the Yorkshire Post suggested that a former England player and Y.C.C.C member thought the inclusion of images of Asian women spectators was inapropriate. The images were drawn from photographs of a recent Headingley match. Artist Kate Maddison responded by saying "the designs represent the contemporary cricket audience and grounds as well as the historic achievements of Sir Leonard Hutton."
