Stephen Bailey; "You Are Here/Now"

The work consists of eight lead- covered concrete slabs, each carrying an impression of a small part of Mastiles Lane.

The slabs are a record of the surface that has been formed by centuries of economic and political activity, reflecting some of Mastiles Lane. Their precise position is marked using a GPS and map reference, their resemblance to stepping stones enables one to walk metaphorically the entire length of the lane in a matter of seconds.

Nicola Bird; Ceramic Relief

"My work draws on mapping, self similarity (fractals) and literature in its explanation of the local landscape. Words... take the form of footpaths walking across the body of the work." The words of children from Kirkby Malham Primary School map were collected during workshops and shown alongside the words of Jeanette Winterson to reveal our internal relationship with landscape. The topographical reliefs were achieved by working the clay with objects found whilst walking the route of Mastiles Lane.

Martin Heron; Shepherds' crooks

"I have taken the traditional image of the shepherd's crook to form small outdoor installation pieces on sites around the Malham area that make reference to sheep farming and the pilgrimage of visitors across the local landscape." Crooks carry a great deal of iconographical symbolism surrounding the shepherd and his flock, they mark the importance of historic trade routes, monastic route ways and echo the Roman standard. Being black, the crooks can be read as shadows, that reflects historical and contemporary aspects of a changing environment.

Janette Ireland; Cobblestone Mosaic

The stylised image of a rams head is overlaid with shepherds crooks and realised in Cobblestone paving to make reference to the importance of sheep farming to the locality. Janette created the rams head with small natural colour pebbles laid in a variety of patterns and textures, using a combination of traditional and contemporary Cobblestone mosaic techniques. She ran workshops with local residents to create sections of the crook that runs alongside the path leading to the youth hostel entrance.

Karen Lennox - Photographic Installation

This piece combines photographs of the landscape around Malham with quotations from local people. The images capture details of typical natural elements and traces of human intervention. Isolating details in this way focuses attention on pattern and texture and the unique features which give the Dales their distinctive appearance. The concern for all who appreciate the area is to balance protection and conservation of habitat with the economic necessities of farming and recreation.

Joanna Mille - Video: Circular

Created from sounds and images recorded during walks starting and ending in Malham over a two month period, 'Circular' celebrates the re-opening of the area following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. The walks included Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss which are areas of outstanding natural beauty with an elemental appeal. The popular imagery of the area has been framed and edited with an emphasis on qualities of light and subtle movement, to produce an abstract work that looks at the area afresh.
